A Ritual for the Best Version of You

At the dawn of a new phase, I’m called to redefine myself, maybe you are, too. Life flows through cycles, and this ritual is about honoring the pause before the change. Marking these cycles with a certain specialness will help you transition into what’s next.

Timing

This ritual is most potent at the beginning of something new (or the end of something old). It would be most powerful to align it with an event such as:
Beginning of the calendar year
On or soon after your birthday
New moon phase
At the beginning of a new project
At the end of an old project

The ritual

Ground yourself fully into the space you’ve taken up. Meditate for five minutes, set your circle, be present with your altar or simply breathe in fully.

Light a candle with drippy wax.

Grab a sheet of paper and an inky black pen; bonus points if your paper and pen feel super special. If you’re like me, I enjoy the tactile nature of a few quality writing supplies.

As many times as you can, fill in the blank: “I am the best version of me when _______.” Below are some examples that I have come up for myself in the past:

I am the best version of me when I create.
I am the best version of me when I collaborate.
I am the best version of me when I work while inspired and stop when I'm empty.
I am the best version of me when I work out and do yoga consistently.
I am the best version of me when I eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep.
I am the best version of me when I am present with friends and family.

Spend some time reflecting on these statements, and read them out loud.

Fold and seal the paper with dripped wax. A small dab should do. Set aside on your altar, in your bag or wallet, in a dresser drawer or somewhere else where you won’t forget it.

Decide when you will check unseal the list, and put it in your calendar. Three to six months is a good starting point, or you could decide to open it in a year. Revisit what has worked well, and what hasn’t.

Change courses accordingly.
